GeekStorage Staff Profile

As suggested from one of our awesome geeks who hosts with us here at GeekStorage, we're going to publish some staff profiles over the next couple of weeks so that you can get to know more about the folks behind the scenes.

Jay Higdon

What is your title and how long have you been working for GeekStorage?

I am a Head Geek of GeekStorage.com, LLC, and I've been with GeekStorage for just over 5 years.

What is the favorite thing about your job?

I would have to say my favorite thing is debugging. I'm a problem solver, so every time a problem comes up that I have to solve, I really tend to enjoy it (unless I just went to sleep! haha).

Windows or Mac?

Definitely.

Unraveling the Mystery of Virtual Private Servers (VPS)

July 25, 2012 at 11:30 AM

I have been in the web hosting industry since 2002 and I've seen a lot of confusion and mystery surrounding Virtual Private Servers (VPS) over the years.

This article is the first in a series of articles I'm going to write about our new Xen VPS offerings and how having one can benefit any website, big or small, and that they may not be as confusing to operate as one might think.

What is a Xen VPS?

With typical shared web hosting, a user is given a storage and bandwidth allocation on a dedicated server and they share the server's CPU, memory and other resources with hundreds of other users.

With a Xen VPS, a server's resources are divided into much larger resource allocations and the user is given an isolated, virtualized dedicated server environment. In other words, a virtual dedicated server with each Xen VPS having its own operating system and control panel. There are much fewer users per server, as compared to shared web hosting, and as a result, Xen VPS have much better performance. Because each Xen VPS is ran under its own isolated environment, security is also much stronger. With shared web hosting, the vulnerability of your neighbor's script could impact you. With a Xen VPS, this vulnerability won't affect you as your environment is isolated from your neighbor's environment. Additionally, because a Xen VPS is running its own operating system, you have more flexibility than with shared web hosting. You can install what you want, when you want and you aren't limited to the restrictions imposed on shared web hosting (what processes you can and cannot run, how often you can run them, how many e-mails you can send per hour, etc.).

CloudFlare, Attracta & More!

July 20, 2012 at 12:07 PM

Hi Geeks!

Last month I wrote about a couple of new features in the works. Today, I can announce the addition of CloudFlare and Attracta to our Shared Hosting and Reseller Hosting servers. We hope you will enjoy these two new features, both of which can be used for free on a basic level.

CloudFlare

CloudFlare Logo

CloudFlare operates one of the largest content delivery networks (CDN) on the internet and its mission is to accelerate and protect websites using the service. Our users can activate CloudFlare within their cPanel Control Panel with the click of a button. After activating CloudFlare, our users can then easily select which domain(s) to utilize with the CloudFlare service. To users who activate CloudFlare on their service with us, your websites will load faster and have an additional layer of security.

One of the basic concepts behind CloudFlare is their CDN. As users access your website, your content will be cached remotely on a CloudFlare CDN server closest to your user, geographically. This allows for faster response times.

SEO implications of CloudFlare are positive as well. Major search engines like websites that load fast and CloudFlare will help you achieve further success with faster response times of your website.

To view more information, and to review all of the features available with CloudFlare, you can visit their website at http://www.cloudflare.com/overview.

Domain Registration, Renewal and Transfer Price Increase

December 4, 2011 at 3:10 PM

Dear Geeks,

Effective January 15, 2012, Verisign will again be increasing the cost to register .com and .net TLD’s. This price increase, along with increases for other TLD's over the years, is currently almost annually and affects all registrars and subsequently, end users. This will be the third price increase, by Verisign, in the last few years. Up until now, we have absorbed the cost of these price increases, however, we can no longer continue to absorb these price increases.

On January 15, 2012, the cost of a new domain registration, renewal or transfer (for all TLD’s we offer) will increase from the current base rate of a domain registration, renewal or transfer from $10.00/year to a new domain registration, renewal or transfer rate of $12.00/year. We have enabled the ability for you to login to our account management website and renew any existing domains you have from anywhere between 1-10 years, at the current rate of $10.00/year per domain.

You can login to renew your domains at the current rate, here:
http://www.geekstorage.com/account

After January 15, 2012, all existing domain registrations maintained by GeekStorage.com will increase to the new base rate of $12.00/year per domain. If you have an existing coupon code discounting the cost of a domain registration, renewal or transfer, that coupon will still be valid after the price increase takes effect. We believe this new rate is a competitive rate and will allow us to continue to offer domain registrations, renewals and transfers for our customers.

Thank you for your understanding. If you have any questions about this notice, please do not hesitate to e-mail us at [email protected].

Regards,

Matt & Jay, Head Geeks
