'Git' Your Website Under Control!

'Git' Your Website Under Control!
August 8, 2012 at 9:33 AM

If you are reading this, you probably have a website. Maybe even a website on git-enabled shared hosting. Maybe you already know about git, or maybe not. Regardless, I would like to shed some light on how you can use the power of git  (or in this case, the simplicity of git) to 'git' your website under control! If you have ever fiddled with an FTP client, a text editor or an IDE for hours on end, just to squeeze a step or two out of your routine site updates or version deployments, you will soon have a friend in git.

With a few git commands under your belt, it is easy to go from FTP to a version control-enabled website deployment scheme. Click past the break to continue reading.

GeekStorage is proud to offer git website hosting.

Up and Running With SSH

August 1, 2012 at 1:29 PM

With this tutorial, I hope to help you better understand how to use SSH and why it can be a great tool for managing your website. On average, only about 10% of our shared hosting users actually use SSH access. We want this number to be higher, because SSH access is extremely powerful for managing your website files and software. FTP can get you pretty far, but if you want real, fast controls for your files, you will want to be familiar with SSH! Additionally, this article will be extremely helpful to a beginner who's trying out one of our extremely cheap Xen VPS plans.

How does one get this wonderful "SSH" enabled?

First, make sure SSH is enabled on your account. This can be done by contacting technical support, or by simply running through the rest of this tutorial, if you see an error message when logging in, then you will need to request SSH access from technical support.

If you have a VPS, you already have SSH access to your server.

SSH access tools are completely free!

There are free SSH access utilities for all operating systems, and most include them by default. There are two major operating systems to be concerned with when it comes to connecting to SSH: Windows and Linux.

If you are using Windows, you will need to download a program called "PuTTY" to be able to access any SSH connection. You can find this program at PuTTY's Website.  Just grab "putty.exe" from the Downloads page of this website, and place it on your desktop or wherever you like for easy access. No install is necessary, just click putty.exe and you're ready to enter your connection information.

Windows - Coming Soon to a VPS Near You

July 31, 2012 at 10:44 AM

Windows

Greetings Geeks!

We've had a lot of requests for Windows-based VPS since launching our Linux Xen VPS offerings a few months ago. Last week, we signed the SPLA with Microsoft and have started to deploy Windows VPS for users who have previously contacted us requesting this service. In the coming weeks, as we refine our offering, we will begin offering Windows VPS directly from our website.

Tentatively, we will be offering Windows Server 2003 & 2008. Our Windows VPS will be at a slightly higher price point ($5/mo. more) than our Linux offering, due to the licensing costs associated with Windows.

If you would like to know more or you would like to try out our new Windows VPS service before we officially launch it, please e-mail us at [email protected].

What is your title and how long have you been working for GeekStorage?

I am a Head Geek of GeekStorage.com, LLC, and I've been with GeekStorage for just over 5 years.

What is the favorite thing about your job?

I would have to say my favorite thing is debugging. I'm a problem solver, so every time a problem comes up that I have to solve, I really tend to enjoy it (unless I just went to sleep! haha).

Windows or Mac?

Definitely.
