What is DNS propagation? How long will it take?

This article will briefly describe what DNS propagation is and how long it typically takes to complete.

What is DNS propagation?

Propagation refers to the distribution of DNS changes for your domain to DNS servers worldwide. Until DNS changes have propagated around the world, your website and e-mail may not work properly.

Common actions which require DNS propagation:

  • Creating a new domain
  • Modifying your domain's name servers
  • Adding a new subdomain to your domain
  • Adjusting your MX records
  • Moving from a shared IP to a dedicated IP

How long does propagation take?

Propagation may be instant for some, but may take up to 24 hours for some systems to see the new settings. Time for propagation to complete can range from instantaneous to about 24 hours and it can vary from location to location. We recommend waiting 24-36 hours for propagation to complete.
